Blood Pressure

Sphygmomanometer

*Blood pressure is the measure of the force of blood against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps it around the body

*Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and is recorded as two numbers:

*Systolic pressure (the higher number)

*Diastolic pressure (the lower number)

For example, a blood pressure reading of 120/80 mmHg would be expressed as 120 over 80

*Systolic pressure is the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats and pumps blood through the body.

*Diastolic pressure is the pressure in the arteries when the heart is at rest, between beats.

*Normal blood pressure is considered to be around 120/80 mmHg.

*Hypertension (High blood pressure)

*Hypotension (Low blood pressure)

*High blood pressure or hypertension is defined as a systolic pressure of 140 mmHg or Higher, or a diastolic pressure of 90 mmHg or higher.

*Low blood pressure or hypotension is defined as a systolic pressure of 90 mmHg or lower, or a diastolic pressure of 60 mmHg or lower

*Blood pressure can be measured using a manual sphygmomanometer (a cuff that is inflated manually) or an automatic digital blood pressure

*Blood pressure should be measured in a seated position, with the arm at heart level and the cuff at the same level as the heart.

Management

Managing blood pressure involves making lifestyle changes such as

*Healthy diet

*Physical activity

*Maintaining a healthy weight

*Limiting the intake of alcohol and salt

*It is important to note that hypertension is a silent disease, as it doesn't have any symptoms

*Regular monitoring of blood pressure is important to detect and manage hypertension early on
